Simon de Pury

Simon de Pury is one of the leading figures in the art market. He is renowned for his legendary performance on the auction podium and for his deep and longstanding knowledge of the global marketplace.

From 2000 to 2012 he was Chairman and Chief Auctioneer of Phillips de Pury & Company. Earlier in his career he was Chairman Europe and Chief Auctioneer Worldwide at Sotheby’s. He was also curator of the Thyssen- Bornemisza Collection that today is housed in it’s own museum in Madrid. Simon has been instrumental in championing the careers of many contemporary artists, photographers and designers. He has auctioned and secured a substantial number of the most legendary art collections for auctions and private treaty.

At the beginning of 2013 Simon founded, together with his wife Michaela, de Pury de Pury, a company specialising in conceiving and curating exhibitions, discovering emerging artists, building collections, advising established collectors and institutions together with facilitating private transactions of Impressionist, Modern, Post War and Contemporary Art.

In 2010, he was the subject of an hour-long documentary on the BBC, titled ‘The Man with the Golden Gavel’. In 2010 and 2011 he was mentor in Bravo’s reality TV show ‘Work of Art: The Next Great Artist’.

He is an active charity auctioneer, and over the years has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for a number of charities and cultural institutions.

Dr. Michaela de Pury

Dr. Michaela de Pury was until recently Senior Director at Phillips de Pury & Company and before Senior Partner. She joined the firm in 2001.

She has been instrumental in securing major consignments and private transactions surrounding key works in all sales categories of Contemporary Art, Design and Photography. Her consignments include the Hoener Collection of German Expressionist Art in 2001, the FER Collection in 2004, the Princess Gloria Thurn and Taxis Collection in 2006 and the largest-ever single-owner collection of contemporary Russian art in February 2007.

Prior to joining Phillips de Pury, she was the CEO of Neumeister Auctions in New York; the leading Munich auction company that was started by her father Rudolf Neumeister.

After having obtained her PHD from the University of Hamburg and having written her Doctoral thesis on Medieval and Renaissance Art, she was trained at Christie’s in their London department of Old Master Paintings, at Sotheby’s in their New York department of Modern and Impressionist Art and at Taijan in Paris.

Michaela is married to Simon de Pury, former Chairman of Phillips de Pury. She is an auctioneer and avid collector.

Today Michaela is Co-Founder and Partner of de Pury & de Pury, a company specialising in private treaty sales and advising major private collections.

Harmony Hambly-Smith

In early 2013 Harmony helped launch de Pury de Pury, a company owned by Simon and Michaela de Pury specialising in curating exhibitions, benefit auctions, discovering and mentoring emerging artists, building collections, advising established collectors and institutions, together with facilitating private transactions of Impressionist, Modern, Post War and Contemporary Art. Harmony manages all aspects and logistics of the company’s activities, exhibitions, auctions, advisory and the owner’s private collection requiring careful market research, budgeting, negotiation, shipping, insurance, inventory, storage, loaning to galleries, museums and exhibitions.

In 2009 Harmony had joined Phillips de Pury, working closely with Simon and Michaela de Pury across all departments of the Auction House over four years, primarily focusing on the auctions of Contemporary Art, Design and Photography, single owner sales, private transactions, commissions, exhibitions and benefit auctions. Harmony advised clients on all pre and post sale support including research, tailored recommendations, market intelligence, bidding, invoicing, shipping, insurance, taxes, inventory, storage and loaning artworks. Through this she developed close working relationships with gallery owners, dealers, advisors and collectors. Harmony was also involved in organising sale proposals, private viewings, dinners, talks and tours at the auction house.

Harmony studied Fine Art at the University of Arts London, majoring in Contemporary Painting, followed by obtaining a BA Honours degree in Fine Art, History of Art and Architecture from the University of Reading.

In 2015 de Pury de Pury opened an office in Zurich, Switzerland where Harmony is now based, to further focus on the European part of the business, private collections and transactions, and to provide a permanent and convenient point of contact in Europe for their clients.
